Furniture Types
Definition of Furniture:
Furniture
refers to movable durable objects designed to support different human
activities like eating, seating, and sleeping. Furniture is also commonly used
to hold other objects at a comfortable height for storage, or even to work on. In
modern furniture terminology, furniture is now used to refer to artistic
objects, especially if they have been crafted out of metal or wood. In addition
to being used in homes and offices, furniture is used in businesses, as well,
for display purposes, such as in the lobbies of hotels, restaurants, and
conference rooms.
Types of Modern Furniture:
One type of modern furniture is byzantine furniture. Byzantine furniture is created from different types of wood products. These include rattan, cane, wicker, silk, and iron. Some of the materials may be colored, while others are left natural. The pieces made out of these materials are very appealing and it can be quite difficult to distinguish them from other types of wooden and metal furniture.
One of the
most common types of Byzantine furniture is walnut furniture. Walnut is a
hardwood that is prized for its strength and versatility. Most walnut woods are
reddish-brown in color. However, there are some woods that are a lighter color
such as pine. The walnut main article of furniture is usually long and narrow
so that it is perfect for wall decoration.
Traditional and Ancient furniture:
Another type
of traditional and ancient furniture is that of the binary. Binary is an
ancient style of furniture that came from the Archaic, Classical, Medieval,
Renaissance, and Georgian periods of architecture. This style of furniture is
characterized by simple lines and simple ornamentation. Unlike the Greek and
Roman styles, binary-influenced furniture is quite utilitarian. Mainly, the
articles made out of this wood are commonplace in homes, offices, and museums.
Italian Furniture:
In the
ancient and the dynastic period, Italian furniture has been most influential.
Made from either oak or cherry wood, Italian furniture made its first
appearance during the 12th century. During the 13th century, Italian furniture
began to take the shape of chairs and tables. Soon, it evolved into the dining
table. During the later part of the 14th century, the Renaissance style of
furniture started to appear. This type of furniture mainly uses metals and wood
in its construction.

Furniture of Persia and China:
Furniture
from China and Persia also gained popularity during the early fifteenth
century. The most common furniture from China was made from bamboo, which
was a favorite because of its strength. Later, when the silk-made textile started
to gain more popularity, the Chinese gradually switched to using wood in making
their furniture.
Greek Furniture:
During the
medieval period, the influence of Greek furniture was noticeable. Greek
furniture mostly used the wood of equal quality, making the pieces look quite
appealing. However, the use of inferior quality wood gave an impression that
Greeks were not the best craftsmen. Soon, the renaissance style of the Italian
craftsman rediscovered the taste for using wood in the production of greek
furniture.
Different Styles of Furniture Designs:
There are
different styles of furniture design according to the type of material used.
Wooden furniture designs are suitable for most interiors. However, metal
furniture is better suited for outdoor use. The classical furniture style is
most suitable for both indoors and outdoors. You can create wonderful interior
decor with the help of wooden and metal furniture.
In Era of Napoleon Bonaparte:
In the era
of Napoleon Bonaparte, the art nouveau furniture gained great popularity. These
pieces of furniture were light, comfortable, and elegant. People loved to sit on
these pieces. Art nouveau furniture included a chair with a wheeled seat and
backrest. A typical art nouveau chair had a broad seat, curved back, and plush
cushioning. They were originally designed to be used by workers who had to sit
for long hours in one place without moving.
Dominant Type of Chair:
Another type
of chair called a glider was originally designed for a shorter worker, the so-called secretary, or a typist, or someone who had to sit at a desk for long
periods of time. Gliders allowed extra space to be used and were much easier to
move than traditional chairs. The seat was reclined as well, allowing the user
to lean forward to read. Chairs with arms were also designed, but they were
designed to be used by women, or for their children. A classic example is an
armless chair which was hugely popular in the 19th century.
Final Words:
When it
comes to sitting arrangements in living rooms, the contemporary style gives the
impression of wide-open spaces. It is possible to get sofas and love seats with
low backs. Such furniture types are fitted with reclining backrests and can
either be left untidy or covered with leather upholstery. Modern living rooms
can accommodate sofas or loveseats and stools. Such furniture types are made
from hardwood, rattan, wicker, and wrought iron.
